LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA, U.S.A., 1999 MAR 18 (NB) --
By Ian Stokell, Newsbytes. A Web site calling itself "The
Official Kevin Mitnick Site," has apparently confirmed an
Associated Press report and a Los Angeles Times article,
both released earlier today, that said the infamous hacker
has signed a plea agreement that would result in him
spending another year in jail.
....
Super hacker Mitnick caught the attention of the nation and
the media a half dozen years ago, as detailed extensively by
Newsbytes at the time, for his hacker/cracker exploits. It
also caught the attention of the FBI, which elevated him to its
top-ten most wanted list until he was arrested some four
years ago.
....
The 35-year-old Mitnick was due to go to trial on computer
and wire fraud charges next month, on April 20.
...
He has already been kept in jail since his arrest in North
Carolina in 1995. The extra year would be added to the time
he has already served, without trial, resulting in a total
sentence of five years.
....
Mitnick's undoing was breaking into San Diego
Supercomputer Center security expert Tsutomu
Shimomutra's computer, stealing security programs written
by Shimomutra. That so infuriated the security expert, that
he helped authorities track Mitnick to an apartment complex
in Raleigh, N.C., using a cell phone direction-finding antenna
connected to a laptop computer.
